Thirty-five years in the bond market. Now working for your board, your platform and your advisors.

I'm Charles Urquhart, CFA. Lehman Brothers trained me, Fidelity Capital Markets put me in charge of a retail bond business, and two fintech firms taught me why good fixed income technology so often fails to get adopted. Today I advise companies, train their people, teach at Loyola, and write about where credit markets meet retail money.

Why Me
  • I've worked the sell side, run a retail bond business, and sold the technology in between.
  • I know how a bond gets from the desk to the client, and where it gets stuck.
  • I know who has to say yes along the way: custodians, platforms and RIA due diligence teams.
  • And I teach. Making a complicated bond topic usable is what I do best.

What Companies Hire Me For

Most firms building in fixed income have engineers, product people and capital. What they're often missing is someone who has sold bonds to the buy side, run a distribution business, and watched good technology stall at the integration step. That's the seat I fill.

Where I Help
  • Advisory board seats: The buyer's point of view, introductions, and honest pushback before the market gives it to you.
  • Buy-side go-to-market: Opening doors with RIAs, SMA managers, trust departments, insurers and family offices, and pushing through to a signed letter of intent.
  • Adoption and workflow review: Walking your product through a buyer's OMS, risk, custody and settlement before you launch or raise.
  • Distribution strategy: How platform gatekeepers and skeptical due diligence teams will read your product, and what they'll ask first.
  • Training and CE: Programs for your relationship managers, wholesalers and new hires, and sponsor-free CE for advisors.

If you're building, launching or explaining something in fixed income, I'd like to hear about it.

Trusted by Advisors and the Firms Behind Them

I've trained advisors through FPA chapters, firm workshops and CE, and taught fixed income to relationship managers and new-hire classes at asset managers. The same work now goes into advising the companies that build what those advisors use.

How I Work

Every engagement starts with a 20-minute call. Advisory seats run on a retainer, equity or a mix. Projects are scoped and priced up front. Training is priced per day. I'm based in Annapolis and happy to travel.

Independent

Nobody sponsors my CE or my opinions. That's why advisors and firms listen to them.

A Practitioner

Thirty-plus years selling bonds, running a bond business and building fixed income technology. I've sat in the seat you're trying to reach.

A Teacher First

Bonds are complicated. I make them usable for whoever has to act, whether that's a board, a sales team or an advisor sitting across from a client.
